Commodities sink as worries about demand resurface

Commodity prices are falling as hopes fade for a quick resolution to Europe's debt crisis.

The price of copper plunged 5.6 percent Wednesday as investors worried that demand for basic materials would shrink if the global economy weakens. Oil fell 3.8 percent. Prices for other metals and agricultural products also dropped.

Palin pick to be Alaska's 2nd female on high court

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has appointed a state judge who once served on the board of Planned Parenthood to the state Supreme Court, against the urgings of a conservative group who claimed the pick would put "another activist" on the court.

Anchorage Superior Court Judge Morgan Christen, 47, will be the second woman to serve on the state's high court. Former Gov. Tony Knowles appointed current Chief Justice Dana Fabe in 1996.

Christen was one of two judges recommended for the post by the Alaska Judicial Council, an independent citizen's commission that evaluates judicial appointments for the governor.

Ex-Boyfriend Arrested in Officer's Death

SAN FRANCISCO - The ex-boyfriend of an off-duty police officer who was shot to death after a memorial service was arrested for investigation of murder Saturday, authorities said.

Quartus Lee Hinton, 28, of Vallejo, was arrested without incident at the Vallejo marina after a daylong manhunt in the San Francisco Bay Area, Richmond police said. Hinton did not yet have an attorney late Saturday.

Authorities said witnesses had identified Hinton as the gunman who shot Officer Kaliah Harper on Friday.
